Brackets” is used interchangeably for various symbols:

  • angle brackets for <>
  • round brackets for ()
  • curly brackets for {}
  • square brackets for []
  • The more specific “braces” and “parentheses” are almost never used for other than {} and ()

ue to technical limitations of display (standard fonts, browsers, etc.) and the fact that the sharp symbol (U+266F ♯ MUSIC SHARP SIGN (HTML ♯)) is not present on most keyboard layouts, the number sign (U+0023 # NUMBER SIGN (HTML #)) was chosen to approximate the sharp symbol in the written name of the programming language.

One word:

  • “braces” for {}
  • “parens” (informally or in the context of programming) or “parentheses” for ()
  • plain “brackets” for [], though “square brackets” is sometimes required to be explicit about the latter.
